  1. An Australian bird (Ptilonorhynchus violaceus [or] Ptilonorhynchus holosericeus), allied to the starling. The male constructs singular bowers or playhouses of twigs and decorates them with bright-colored objects to attract females; the satin bird. (Zool.)
